Cascade Environmental Group staff worked with the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, BPA, and the US Army Corps of Engineers to deauthorize the levee at the Wallooskee-Youngs Restoration Project site. Deauthorization of a federal levee requires an act of congress; the project team lobbied Senator Merckley’s office to add the Wallooskee-Youngs project to the 2014 Water Resources Development Act, and it was passed in Spring 2014. The deauthorization allows the project team to breach and modify the levee to restore estuary habitat.
